Russell A. Spatz started practice in 1975 as a prosecutor in the Miami Dade County State Attorney’s office. Mr. Spatz attained the position of Division Chief in that office under Richard E. Gerstein and thereafter Janet Reno (former United States Attorney General).
When Mr. Spatz left the State, Mrs. Reno wrote:
“I accept with regret your resignation, but I wish you most success and good fortune in your career in private practice. You have demonstrated the best in prosecution as an Assistant State Attorney and we will miss you. On behalf of all the people in Miami Dade County, I thank you for your very dedicated public service.”
Mr. Spatz graduated the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science with Departmental Honors in Mathematics and further received a National Science Foundation Fellowship for post graduate work in Mathematics. He thereafter attended the University of Miami School Of Law and graduated with a Doctorate in Juris Prudence in 1975.
He taught Law School as an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Law at St. Thomas Law School in Miami.
He successfully completed the Florida Supreme Court Family Mediation Training Program and was sworn into the Supreme Court of the United States of America on December 1, 1986. He was sworn into the Florida Bar October 23, 1975 and received a certificate from the National Institute of Trial Advocacy on October 22, 1994.
Mr. Spatz became a member of the bar of the 11th CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS, September 8, 1983 and of the UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF FLORIDA February 28, 1978, qualifying as a member of the trial bar for that court March 22, 1983. He was admitted into the bar of the FEDERAL DISTRICT COURT OF THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA on March 9, 1989.
Mr. Spatz has been recognized in Super Lawyers since 2007 as well as Florida Legal Elite. He has an AVVO rating of “Superb” and a preeminent AV rating with Martindale and Hubbell.
Over his career, Mr. Spatz has tried thousands of cases spanning the range from misdemeanors to serious felonies including first degree murder, racketeering, drug trafficking, etc.
Mr. Spatz is a former member of the National District Attorney’s Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Florida association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a member of the American Bar Association.
Mr. Spatz is a co-founder of Alive Again Ministries and has spoken nationally and internationally on issues concerning recovery. It is not uncommon in the practice of criminal law to deal with clients, and family members or friends of clients who have problems with substance abuse and/or codependency and Mr. Spatz endeavors to help these individuals with these issues when appropriate.
Mr. Spatz is a longtime member of Old Cutler Presbyterian Church and serves as a Deacon at that church.
